How to maximize your page views By Simon Young Don't lose visitors Keep links to other sites to a minimum. Why? Because attracting visitors to your site is expensive. You do not want them clicking on a link and leaving, having visited only a few pages on your site. Fast Loading Keep the number of images to a minimum. Make sure the file size of the images you do use are small. E-mail links Your home page and indeed every page should contain an e-mail link. Do not use images as e-mail links. Why? Images slow down your page. Plus quite often a visitor does even notice a graphical e-mail link, because they are so used to looking for a text link. Headlines When people read newspapers they look at the headline of an article before deciding whether to read. Web Sites are the same. Make links to other pages using catchy titles, make them curious. Text Text on your home page should be sentences, not paragraphs. The home page should be used as an index of your site. It definitely should not contain any of your content.Deeper into your site you should have text but make sure it does not waffle. Especially in the first paragraph.Keep the number of words on each line to a maximum of 15. People find it difficult to read text with long lines. You will notice that in most magazines an A4 page generally has two columns of text, now you know why.
Don't clump everything together Don't be afraid to have some open space on your pages. Do not try and clump everything close together. Scroll Downs Your visitors should not have to make more than 20 clicks on the scroll bar to scroll down your page. Use sub home pages or sections The bpwebmaster site uses sub home pages or sections. We call them "Design & Development", "Marketing", "Services". It means that if our visitors are only interested in the marketing section they can bookmark that page as our home page. Search Engines Remember your index page is the most important for getting listed in search engines. Use meta tags correctly. And do not forward your home page to a deeper URL.Remember your keywords should be included in the body of the page as well. If they are not included in the body of your page then you might as well not include them in your meta tags. Why? Search enigines will not list you under a specific keyword unless that keyword appears in your document. Rather than use single keywords use keyword phrases e.g. press release, search engine submission etc. Navigation Make sure that navigation is clear and consistent throughout your web site. You will note on the bpwebmaster site that our navigation is pretty much the same on each page. We have the Navigation at the top of the page which contains key pages. And URLs to the left of the page so that the majority of pages on our site are either a single click or two clicks away from the current page. |
